2007
Jeep Wrangler
Unlimited Rubicon
JK |
Jeep's
2007 lineup
is finally
out. And with
it comes the
introduction
of the first-ever
4 door Jeep
Wrangler.
The 2007 Jeep
Wrangler Unlimited
comes in three
different
models: X,
Sahara and
Rubicon.
After
a quick scan
of the specs,
the Rubicon
edition really
caught my
attention. |
|
First
on the list
of rock-ready
features is
what Jeep calls
the Rock-Trac
Part-Time 4WD
System. The
heart of the
system is a
super low geared
4:1 transfer
case. This
gear ratio is
comparable to
some Atlas II
and TeraLow
setups.
Next
comes a pair
of Tru-Lok electric
lockers. I canât
say enough about
the convenience
of push-button
locking differentials.
Itâs
an invaluable
option if you
plan to do any
substantial
on-road driving.
The
Jeep sits on
a Dana 44 rear
end complete
with solid axles
and a heavy-duty
housing. Inside
the Dana, the
Rubicon comes
stock with 4.10
gears to make
your final crawl
ratio even better. |
2007
Jeep
3.8 Liter V-6
The
only disappointment
for me was
the new 3.8
liter V-6. Sure
it puts out
more power
than the 4.0
at 202 horsepower
and 240 ft-lbs
of torque,
but
thatâs
still underpowered
in my book.
Throw a Hemi
in the Rubicon
and now we're
talking. |
|
| One
of the more
aggressive
features on
the JK are the
huge wheel
well openings.
The Rubicon
comes stock
with 32-inch
tires, but
can easily fit
35s with a
nominal
2.5-inch lift
kit. With a
4-inch kit,
you're looking
at enough clearance
for up to 37s. |
Jeep
JK Lift Kits
And,
of course, the
lift kits are
starting to
stream into
the market.
Probably the
best kits currently
on the market
include 2.5,
3, 4 and 6-inch
lift kits from
Teraflex. They
also offer a
series of aftermarket
iron including
front and rear
bumpers as well
as a set of
rock sliders. |
|
Overall,
I was very
impressed with
Jeep's latest
rig. Aside
from the somewhat
disappointing
3.8 Liter V-6,
the Rubicon
is pretty beefy.
The 4:1 transfer
case coupled
with a locked
Dana 44 and
4.10 gears
is a pretty
hard combo to
beat in an
off-the-lot-vehicle.
