Installing the OR Fab Bolt-In Sport Cage

I wanted some extra protection on the trail, so I decided to install a full cage roll bar in my 92 Wrangler project vehicle.

Since I don’t have access to a welder (and if I did, I don’t know how to weld) I decided to go with a bolt-in sport cage kit. I researched a few brands and decided to go with the OR Fab kit.

The OR Fab bolt-in sport cage kit includes two main support bars that attach to the stock roll bar and a cross member that connects the two. Each of the bars is powder coated in gloss black and ready to install.

My first step in the install process was removing the stock side bars that run from the roll bar to the windshield. Take care to save the connecting bolts and the threaded inserts from the stock bars—you’ll need these for the new cage.

Next, remove the triangular windshield brackets connecting the windshield to the dash and the mounting screws from each side of the dash.

Once this is done, find the threaded inserts from the stock side bars and place them inside the two main support bars of the new cage. You’ll probably have to pound them in with a hammer. When the inserts are in place, line up the holes on the sides of the new cage with the stock inserts and bolt them in place.

With the stock inserts securely in place, bolt the driver’s side of the new cage to the stock roll bar. Use the stock connecting bolts you saved from the original side bars to mount the new cage.

Now you should be able to line up the holes on the front cage mounts to the existing holes in the dash. With the holes aligned properly, mount the new cage to the dash with the supplied hardware.

With one side complete, attach the cross member to the driver’s side cage bar and begin installing the passenger side bar.

When the passenger side bar is installed, bolt the cross member to each side.

The last step is to bolt the main cage bars to the windshield. Use the supplied hardware to attach the bars to the stock side bar mounting holes.

At this point you’re done, unless you order one of the additional accessories for this kit. OR Fab does offer two additional options including streamer bars that run from the cross member to the stock roll bar and a dash bar that spans the lower portion of the cage, just above the dash.
