 Metal Masher Trail, Moab, Utah

With a name like Metal Masher, you know this 4 rated trail isn’t for beginners. (Or anyone who values their rig’s shiny paint job.) Metal Masher is a well-known trail in the off road playground of Moab, Utah. Along the way, you’ll encounter legendary obstacles like Rock Chucker, Mirror Gulch, Widow Maker Hill and Mother in Law.

The trail is located approximately 8 miles northeast of Moab and accessible from town via Highway 191. Off the highway turn left down the dirt road and continue across the railroad tracks to reach the parking lot. Metal Masher doesn’t ease you into the off road experience.

The trail hits you with a 4+ obstacle right off the bat. Rock Chucker is a gnarly pile of rock that requires drivers to climb up a stepped face, then crawl down a similar descent.

The next obstacle on your journey is Mirror Gulch, an ascent whos high walls routinely chew up side-view mirrors on unsuspecting 4x4’s. Pickup trucks and other vehicles with long overhangs will have an especially difficult time here.

Up next on the trail is Widow Maker Hill. This is another stepped obstacle that favors CJ-7’s and Wranglers. Longer wheelbase vehicles like pickup trucks and full size Broncos have a tendency to become high centered on one the many steps that mark this climb. The first step in particular is a doozy thanks to a near vertical 6-foot climb that will have you seeing blue sky out your windshield.

Metal Masher’s final obstacle is Mother in Law, yet another series of steps that can really crunch your vehicles body panels if you’re not careful.

In addition to the many obstacles, take a minute to check out the local landmarks. Be sure to stop at the Gooney Bird in Little Canyon. But as local legend has it, don’t run over the Gooney Bird’s toes lest you have bad luck on the rest of the trail. Also, take care to stop and see the 1300-foot vista from Arth’s Rim.
